Turkish legislators are considering a proposal to soften a controversial law which severely restricts freedom of speech. Turkey has been under pressure to abolish or overhaul Article 301 as part of its campaign for European Union membership. The law was passed in 2005, part of a package of penal laws making it a crime to "insult Turkishness".
