Life of the Sisters of Ladakh. On a high altitude plateau, many young women are choosing to become buddhist nuns, living in monasteries on the mountaintops. Aside from being afforded the opportunity to develop their spirituality, these young women are gaining some independence and freedom that they would otherwise not have had in their rural lives. Dr. Traore has been at the forefront in the fight to protect the rights of women suffering from obstetric fistula, who are often rejected by their communities and husbands.
